Understanding EMDR Therapy

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an empirically validated, scientific psychotherapy approach designed to help individuals heal from the debilitating symptoms and emotional distress resulting from adverse life experiences.


The brain’s natural information processing system is directly tied to mental wellness. When this system is blocked or disrupted by the impact of a traumatic or deeply distressing event, emotional wounds form, leading to intense and prolonged psychological pain. Once this neurological block is cleared, the innate healing process resumes. Certified EMDR therapists act as facilitators, guiding clients to re-engage and activate their own natural, adaptive recovery systems.


EMDR is a comprehensive, eight-phase therapeutic model. During specific phases of the process, eye movements (or other forms of bilateral stimulation) are utilized. An EMDR therapist and a client identify a target memory to address. The client is then guided to hold distinct elements of this memory in awareness while tracking the clinician’s hand as it moves back and forth across their visual field. This structured process stimulates internal associations, allowing the client to fully process the distressing memory components. Through successful EMDR therapy, the original narrative transforms on both cognitive and emotional levels. For example, a survivor of trauma shifts from feelings of intense fear and self-blame to a core, adaptive belief: "I survived, and I am strong."


As a result, clients gain profound self-insight, alleviate deep-rooted emotional distress, and naturally cultivate adaptive behavioral patterns. The duration of counseling depends heavily on the complexity of the trauma history and the age of onset of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).


The Eight Phases of EMDR Therapy


EMDR therapy integrates diverse therapeutic elements to maximize long-term treatment outcomes. This holistic framework simultaneously addresses three distinct time frames: the past, the present, and the future. Beyond processing underlying historical memories, significant emphasis is placed on current triggers causing distress, alongside developing the specific coping skills, resilience, and positive mindsets needed for future growth. These elements are systematically navigated through an intensive eight-phase approach:


  • Phase 1: History Taking and Treatment Planning The clinician conducts a comprehensive evaluation of the client's readiness and co-creates an individualized treatment plan. Together, the therapist and client identify target memories, current distressing situations, and historical themes for EMDR processing. This stage also highlights the development of explicit functional skills and behavioral patterns needed for future scenarios.


  • Phase 2: Preparation and Grounding Techniques The therapist introduces the client to various stabilization, imagery, and stress-reduction techniques. These evidence-based tools are practiced extensively to ensure emotional safety both during sessions and between appointments.


    Phases 3 - 6: Assessment, Desensitization, Installation, and Body Scan A specific target memory is pinpointed and systematically processed using standardized EMDR protocols. The client identifies crucial target elements, including:

    1. The most vivid visual image representing the distressing memory

    2. A negative self-referencing belief (Negative Cognition)

    3. Accompanying emotional states

    4. Physical bodily sensations


    Concurrently, the client identifies a desired positive belief (Positive Cognition). The therapist assesses the current validity of this positive belief alongside the intensity of the negative emotions. The client then concentrates on the image, the negative thought, and physical sensations while engaging in sets of dual attention bilateral stimulation (which may involve rhythmic eye movements, tactile taps, or auditory tones). The type and duration of these sets are uniquely tailored to each individual. Clients are encouraged to simply notice whatever emerges naturally.


    After each bilateral set, the therapist prompts the client to report any thoughts, feelings, imagery, memories, or bodily sensations that surfaced. This process repeats multiple times throughout the session. If the processing stalls or feels overwhelming, the clinician utilizes specialized protocols to keep the treatment moving forward.


    When the client reports no further distress related to the targeted memory, they are guided to focus on the initial positive belief, updating or refining it if necessary. Repeated bilateral sets help firmly integrate and "install" this empowering belief into the cognitive network.


  • Phase 7: Closure and Self-Monitoring To ensure psychological stability at the end of a session, the therapist provides definitive closure instructions. The client is asked to maintain a brief journal until the next meeting, tracking any related thoughts, dreams, or triggers. They are also encouraged to actively utilize the self-soothing and grounding techniques mastered in Phase 2.


  • Phase 8: Re-evaluation and Progress Assessment Every subsequent session opens with Phase 8. The clinician and client review the progress made since the last visit. If the targeted memory requires further attention, processing resumes where it left off. Once a specific memory is completely resolved, the therapeutic focus shifts to the next clinical target.
